Stainless steel is initially produced in slabs, which are then put through a conversion process using a Z mill, which converts the slab into coil prior to further rolling. These wide coils are typically made at around 1250mm (sometimes a little wider) and are known as ‘mill edge coils’.
These wide coils are further processed using a range of manufacturing techniques such as slitting, where the wide coil is slit into a multitude of strands; this is where much of the
confusion around the terminology comes in. After slitting, the
stainless steel forms a batch of coils taken from the mother coil and these are referred to by many different names, including strip coils, slit coils, banding or simply strips.
The way coils are wound can result in different names being applied to them. The most common type is known as a’pancake coil’, named after the way the coil looks when laid flat; ‘ribbon wound’ is another name for this method of coiling.
Another type of winding is ‘traverse’ or ‘Oscillated’ , also known as ‘bobbin wound’ or ‘spool’ due to the fact that it looks like a bobbin of cotton sometimes these can be physically wound onto a plastic spool. Producing coil in this way allows much larger coils to be produced, resulting in improved stability and better production yields.
Cold rolled stainless steel coil
The stainless steel coil was rolled by cold rolling mill at room temperature. Conventional thickness ranges from 0.1 mm to 3 mm and width from 100 mm to 2000 mm.
Cold-rolled stainless steel coil
It has the advantages of smooth surface, flat surface, high dimensional accuracy and good
mechanical properties. Most of the products are rolled and can be processed into coated steel sheets.
The production process of cold rolled stainless steel coil is pickling, normal temperature rolling, lubrication, annealing,
leveling, fine cutting and packaging.
Hot rolled stainless steel coil
It is made of hot coil mill with a thickness of 1.80mm-6.00mm and a width of 50mm-1200mm. Hot-rolled stainless steel has the advantages of low hardness, easy processing and good ductility. Its production processes are pickling, high temperature rolling, process lubrication, annealing, leveling, finishing and packaging.
There are three main differences between cold-rolled stainless steel coil and hot-rolled stainless steel coil.
First of all, the strength and yield strength of cold-rolled stainless steel coil are better, and the ductility and toughness of hot-rolled stainless steel coil are better. Secondly, the thickness of cold-rolled stainless steel coil is ultra-thin, while that of hot rolled stainless steel coil is larger. In addition, the surface quality, appearance and dimensional accuracy of cold-rolled stainless steel coil are better than those of hot-rolled stainless steel coil.
